## LaTeX tip: Create a new symbol

Hi people.

If you write in LaTeX as much as I do, you could find this tip useful.

Since I’m a physicist, I work a lot with Fourier Transformations, which could carry an annoying factor of $2\pi$ in the denominator.

$\phi(x) = \int \frac{d^n x}{(2\pi)^n} e^{\imath p\cdot x}\tilde{\phi}(p).$

A notation that might be useful for reducing the typing is the use of the bar notion as in “hbar”, $\hbar = \frac{h}{2\pi}$.

Thus, I search for it, and finally got the following,

\newcommand{\dbar}{\ensuremath{\mathchar'26\mkern-12mu d}}

will define a command \dbar which allows us to write

$\phi(x) = \int {\mathchar'26\mkern-12mu d}^n x e^{\imath p\cdot x}\tilde{\phi}(p).$

Enjoy,

Dox

## Young tableaux in LaTeX

I few month ago I was studying group theory, and the question of How to do Young tableaux in LaTeX pops up.

After question some people, ask in groups and searching in CTAN, here I present the answer, ytableau package.

#### Installation

• Get the zip package ytableau
• Open a terminal and run the following series of commands: (you’ll need sudo power)
$cd /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/$ sudo unzip ~/Downloads/ytableau.zip $sudo texhash • Now the package is ready to be used! Check the manual, inside the zip file or on-line. Enjoy! Dox Read Full Post » ## Increase TeX’s main memory I was looking the last version of the book “Algorithmic Graph Theory”, and one of the comments was about an error in the compilation… due to a lack of TeX memory. I’ve not heard of that problem before, so… just in case some of you is puzzled with this, here is the solution (thx. to mvngu) To increase TeX’s main memory, you need to locate the active texmf.cnf file for your TeX/LaTeX distribution. For example, on Ubuntu you can do so via the command $ kpsewhich texmf.cnf
Then open the file as root with the command

$sudo emacs /usr/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf which will most likely prompt you for an administrator password. Enter the password and search for the line that begins with something such as main_memory = 3000000 % words of inimemory available; also applies to inimf&mp Change the value “3000000″ to “10000000″, i.e. change from 3 million to 10 million. Save your edit and quit your editor. Then issue the command $ sudo fmtutil-sys --all
and compile the book again.

Enjoy!
